The ‘SP-Wind’ code of the TFSO research group at KULeuven simulates the movement of air and how it interacts with its environment under various conditions.

What’s your view on the evolution of HPC (in Europe, in the world, HPC applications...), and, how will this evolve in the future?  

It’s becoming more and more mainstream. The number of areas, both in research and industry, where supercomputing plays a role is increasing. This has been predicted many times during the last forty years. At the end of the eighties, we also thought parallel processing would soon become the norm (laughs).  so It evolves for sure from a niche in research and some  industrial sectors to mainstream.  

In the past years, there have been several European projects that reflect how the government wants to approach HPC. First, there was PRACE, DEISA, and now EuroCC. How do you see this evolve in the future?

LUMI is one of the pan-European pre-exascale supercomputers. It is also the fastest supercomputer in Europe (the Top500 list published in May 2023) and the third fastest globally.

This four-day on-site (Warsaw, Poland) and online course serve as a general comprehensive introduction to the LUMI architecture and programming environment. It will include lessons about compiling and using software, programming models (HIP and OpenMP offload), porting, executing jobs, and optimizing applications to run on AMD MI250X. After the course, you will be able to work efficiently on both the CPU (LUMI-C) as well as GPU partition (LUMI-G).
