LUMI Hackathon

The LUMI hackathon is a way for a team to get help to optimize software for the AMD GPUs used in LUMI-G. We are looking for teams that already have a code that runs on AMD GPUs but that need assistance to eliminate some bottlenecks in their code. The hackathon is an in-person only event and we expect 2 to 4 members of the team who collectively have a complete understanding of the code to be physically present in Helsinki. Each team will receive mentoring and advice from specialists from AMD, HPE and the LUMI User Support team. We are especially looking for codes that are fully open source or at least freely available to academics.

We will organise an accompanying course about profiling GPU programs the week before the hackathon. It will happen online on the 13 April from 9:00 until 17:00. Attendance from teams joining the hackathon is advised.

MPI heavyweight Dr Rolf Rabenseifner has recently retired. However, we could catch the former Head of Parallel Computing, Training and Application Services at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), University of Stuttgart, for an extensive talk.

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) isthe European body created in 2018 and located in Luxembourg to lead the way in European supercomputing. It is composed of the public members (European Union represented by the European Commission), Members States and Associated Countries and public members.

EuroHPC-JU is currently in the process of expanding its team and is looking to recruit several Programme Officers to join its Infrastructure team. The Programme Officers will contribute to the preparation and implementation of the technical and administrative activities necessary to accomplish the mission of the Joint Undertaking, in particular to develop and support the European integrated world-class supercomputing and data infrastructure and a highly competitive and innovative HPC ecosystem.

Night temperature in Ghent.

As part of the LUMI consortium Belgium was provided early access to the supercomputer and could run several pilot projects on LUMI including the CS-MASK project (Royal Meteorological Institute, RMI and UGent) and the LIFTHRASIR project (KU Leuven). Both pilot users were very enthusiastic about LUMI and its performance. Find out more on the LUMI website!

LUMI is one of the two EuroHPC pre-exascale systems. While still under assembling, it will be a mostly GPU-accelerated system, built by HPE-Cray using AMD Epyc CPUs and AMD Instinct GPUs. It is operated by CSC, the national supercomputer centre of Finland and it is jointly funded by EuroHPC and a consortium of ten countries, including Belgium. As part of the agreement, some compute time is therefore reserved for Belgian users.

The first call for the Belgian fraction of the LUMI compute time is open till 22 April 2022, 23.59 h. Only the CPU partition is available for this call. All the relevant information, including the application form, are available on our LUMI page.
