Unlocking CFD Performance at Scale with Ansys Fluent and the Flemish Supercomputer Centre

In this session, we bridge the gap between Ansys Fluent and supercomputing. You will discover how Ansys is constantly working to accelerate the entire CFD workflow, what recent developments there are in the field of meshing, and how CFD simulations can be drastically accelerated with the Fluent native multi-GPU solver. The VSC's GPU infrastructure offers a unique opportunity to explore the added value of high-end GPUs for your own CFD workflow. Using benchmark cases, we will show you how to deploy the multi GPU solver in a supercomputing environment such as the VSC and what scalability and speedups are achievable across multiple GPUs. We will also address the main challenges that arise when bridging commercial CFD software with HPC infrastructure.

As a concrete example, we collaborated with the Innoptus Solar Team, the renowned team of KU Leuven engineering students who have already won two world titles. We transferred their computationally intensive aerodynamic CFD simulations, originally performed on CPU, to GPU in order to further support the rapid development cycle of their next solar car.

HPC and GPU computing are transforming the way we approach CFD. With Fluent's native multi-GPU solver running on VSC infrastructure, we can demonstrate that high fidelity simulations are no longer reserved for those with unlimited time and patience.

- Emmerick Vandervelpen

Pieter, aerodynamic engineer of the previous Solar Team, will explain the various CFD cases that were tested. He takes you through the various development phases: the aerodynamic optimization of the solar car, the validation and optimization of their innovative fin design, and the use of CFD to refine their strategic model for the race in Australia, so that they can obtain as realistic idea of their energy consumption on the road of Australia. Finally, he explains how they validated their CFD model using wind tunnel tests.
